The history of colonisation in São Tomé and Príncipe was deeply marked by the phenomenon known as Roça.
This expression comes from the Portuguese "desbravar bush", "abrir clareiras", which gave its name to the agrarian structures that underpinned the development of the archipelago during its coffee and cocoa cycle, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Pico Papagaio is the most emblematic peak on the island of Príncipe. It is visible from the city of Santo António and is approximately 680 metres high. It consists of a volcanic rock formation surrounded by forest. It is located within the boundaries of the Natural Park. Along the path that leads to the top of the peak, you can see endemic birds, orchids and various medicinal plants. The views we get of the island are spectacular.
